Explore the reciprocal relationship between reading and writing and learn how writing supports word recognition, language development, and comprehension
Strengthening Literacy Through the Reading–Writing Connection
This professional learning session focuses on strengthening literacy instruction by intentionally connecting reading and writing within K–5 classrooms. Participants will examine research on the reciprocal relationship between reading and writing and explore how writing supports word recognition, language development, and comprehension. The session highlights evidence-based practices such as sentence-level writing, transcription skills, and text-based writing that reinforce reading development. Educators will analyze instructional practices and student writing to identify opportunities for stronger alignment between reading and writing and consider how integrated instruction can support strong Tier 1 literacy and inform instructional decision-making.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
Explain the reciprocal relationship between reading and writing and describe how writing supports word recognition, language development, and comprehension.
Identify evidence-based writing practices that strengthen reading development, including sentence-level work, transcription skills (handwriting and spelling), and text-based writing.
Analyze literacy instruction to determine where reading and writing are intentionally connected, and where opportunities for stronger alignment exist.
Design instruction that integrates reading and writing within Tier 1 instruction, ensuring that writing tasks reinforce the skills and knowledge students are developing as readers.
Use student writing as a source of instructional evidence to inform reading instruction, intervention decisions, and progress monitoring.
